Here’s everything you’ve always wanted to know about teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening can give you the whiter smile you desire.

Here’s everything you’ve always wanted to know about teeth whitening.

First, you need a checkup.

Your dentist will give you a dental exam to make sure your mouth is healthy and that your teeth are ready for bleaching. If you have gum disease or cavities, they need to be taken care of first before you can get a whiter smile.

What should you expect when you go for teeth whitening?

Your dentist will take a photo of the current shade of your teeth.

Your teeth will then be polished to make sure there’s no plaque on the surface.

Your mouth will then be isolated with gauze to make sure your teeth stay dry for the procedure. Retractors will be used to make sure your cheeks, lips and tongue are not touched by the whitening solution. Your gums will be protected by a barrier too.

The front surface of your teeth will then be coated with a whitening solution. A light or laser will then cure this solution. Repeated cycles may be required if you choose a lighter shade. A maximum of three cycles can be done for some products.

Your teeth will be rinsed after and fluoride may be applied to help ease tooth sensitivity.

The entire procedure can take an hour or an hour and a half.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

No. You will feel some sensitivity but teeth whitening shouldn’t hurt. Your dentist will make sure your mouth, cheek, tongue and gum area are protected during the process. Your dentist may also prescribe pain relievers for the sensitivity.

What should you do after teeth whitening?

Your dentist will tell you to avoid food or beverages that are rich in pigment for at least 24 hours. That includes coffee, tea, tomato sauce, mustard, beets, grapes, candies, red wine. Avoid smoking or use of tobacco too.

Tea, coffee and wine can really stain teeth so limiting your intake even after the initial 24 hours of your procedure can help your teeth stay sparkly white.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

The procedure cost can range from P12,000 to P25,000 depending on the shade you choose.
